How To Make A Time Lapse With Light Room?

Are you a fan of Lightroom and its nondestructive editing workflow? And do you know that you can also use it to make Time Lapse? How? This is what we will see together in this article ...

I'll say before we start there are three methods to create a time-lapse under Lightroom (Lr):

The first (simplest) is to use exclusively Lr to modify its images and export them in a video sequence. This is the method that I detail in this article.

The second is to use a plugin (Lr Timelapse) and to navigate between this plugin and Lightroom to make a video of a very high visual quality (I speak quickly at the end of the article).

The third is to use Lr to edit and export images and to use third-party software to assemble the video.
I do not go back to the definition of Time Lapse and the shooting parameters because they have already been developed previously. So here we are: you have your photos and you are about to import them into Lightroom.

The time-lapse 100% Lightroom

Know, before going further,  that you need at least version 5 of Lightroom.

But, before importing these images and creating your Time Lapse, you will have to proceed with a small template addition in Lightroom. A temp ... what? Yes, sorry, the photo is a bit like marketing, many terms are in English.

In Lightroom, a template is actually a small file grouping several actions. It automates a process flow. This is the equivalent of the macro in Excel or actions in Photoshop.

Since Lightroom does not naively contain predefined templates to export its photos in 24 frames / second movies, you will have to add it yourself.

Importing the template into Lightroom

To do this, download the template from light room-blog.com by clicking on Download Slideshow Template.

Once the file is downloaded and unzipped, start Lightroom, then go to the Slideshow module. From there, go to the Template Browser (on the left side of the screen) and right-click on User Templates. Finally, click Import ... to import the template (with the extension .template) that you have just downloaded. There you go! that's all. The new user template now appears in the list. Everything is now OK to create your first Time Lapse video.

The creation of the Time Lapse

The video below will teach you how to:

Upload your photos to the library

Retouch your first photo in the series (exposure and color correction, cropping) and apply by synchronizing settings, changes to the entire series of photos.

Import the music and export the sequence in MP4 format.

NB: the video below was made with templates that are no longer downloadable today but the realization principle is strictly the same. The only difference is that when you export, you will not be able to choose the number of frames per second. Only the choice of the size of the video is possible.

A few words about Lr Timelapse ...

If you want to go further in the realization of Tim elapses under Lr, I can only advise you to go to the site of Gunther Wigner and download the plugin he created for Lightroom (from version 3 for Mac / PC). If you master English or German and want to improve in this type of effect, this is the site to have in his favorites ...

This plugin exists in a free form (sequence of 400 images) or paid (unlimited number of images of course). This one will allow you to remove among others the effects of flickering (and yes, still of English!), Ie the flickering that there is when the conditions of light vary.
